HOMILY OF 7TH FRIDAY OF EASTER — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: LANGUAGES OF LOVE
BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa
Acts 25:13b–21; John 21:15–19
Love can be expressed through different gestures (languages) such as words of affirmation, offering heartfelt compliments, and encouragement. Other ways of expressing love are through acts of service or helpful actions. More still, presenting gifts expresses thoughtfulness and love in tangible form. Quality Time means giving undivided attention. Physical Touch includes hugs, hand-holding, and comforting presence. Love is not just spoken—it’s translated through action.

Whatever the dialect, when spoken sincerely, love is always understood—even if your accent is terrible! Jesus is a polyglot who spoke so many love languages. He spoke the language of love mainly in his incarnation, ministry, passion, death, and resurrection. After the resurrection, Jesus asked Peter three times: “Do you love me?” Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.”
Jesus wanted to make Peter know that pastoral care of the flock requires total commitment. Having denied Jesus three times, Jesus wanted Peter to reaffirm his love three times. We all have a common vocation to love. Love of God and love of Jesus are not mere lip service but require making sacrifices. It is easy to fall in love, yet only people who remain faithful in love are great. It is easy to declare love, but love requires commitment. Jesus still speaks different languages of love to us every day. How do we respond to his love? Jesus is asking you, “Do you love me?”
