HOMILY OF 8TH WEDNESDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (ASH WEDNESDAY) — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “HAVE MERCY ON US, O LORD, FOR WE HAVE SINNED.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Joel 2:12-18, Psalm 51, 2 Corinthians 5:20-6:2, Matthew 6:1-6.16-18
On Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten Season, the readings remind us of our need to strengthen our relationship with God through repentance, ongoing conversion, and spiritual practices like Fasting, Prayer and Almsgiving, and the need to perfect our relationship with fellow humans by forgiving as we have been forgiven in Christ, and by being more generous, not only with material provisions, but more importantly, with attitudes, behavioral demands and spiritual favors.

The Lenten Season will conclude just before the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. We are therefore given Forty Days during which we must strengthen our lives through growth in virtue; during which we must be more supportive of our church, our communities, our families and other individuals in our lives; and during which, through introspection, we cultivate new habits that would continue to endure and abide long after Lent. All these demands are possible only if, as we are reminded by the placement of the Ashes on our foreheads today, we realize our nothingness and the futility of the things that matter in today’s world, and become truly humble in our relationship with God and with others. As we make our Lenten resolutions, let us strive for perfection by simply recommitting ourselves to the commitments we have made to God, to the church (our place of contact with the Lord through worship and sacraments), to our families (the place where we must inspire love and peace), to others and to ourselves (through genuine spiritual and human growth). Now is the acceptable time. It is a time to move away from sin and cultivate and strengthen our virtues. We must tame all lavish and scandalous celebrations and lifestyles, and journey with the Church and with Christ up to the holy mountain of Easter during this holy season. May God bless our Lenten Season.
Have mercy on me, Lord, for I have sinned. Amen.
