HOMILY OF 9TH TUESDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: GIVING BACK TO GOD
BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa
A woman brought a huge offering to church but refused to pay the worker who repaired her roof. God is pleased not only with what we give at the altar, but also with justice in daily life. A driver placed a sticker on his car saying, “God is my protector,” yet he ignored every traffic law on the road. Faith in God is not an excuse for neglecting our civic duties. The Biblical quotation, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s” (Mark 12:17) has been interpreted and even misinterpreted in many different ways.
A common interpretation holds that the sacred has nothing to do with the secular; public life has nothing to do with private life; and religion has nothing to do with politics. This interpretation is wrong as long as we accept that God should be all and in all (1 Corinthians 15:28). We pay taxes to the government because it maintains the infrastructure we enjoy and provides us with security. However, we forget that we live in the world of God. Giving back to God must always be our priority.

In the play, Henry VIII, written by William Shakespeare, Cardinal Wolsey, on his deathbed, confided to Thomas Cromwell: “If I had served God as diligently as I have the King, He would not have given me over in my grey hairs.” Perhaps we find it more difficult to repay God because it is voluntary rather than compulsory.
When we calculate how much we pay in taxes, we may realise that we are paying more to Caesar than we are paying back to God. In this case, the equation is not balanced because we receive more from God than from the government. How often do we remember to give to God through acts of charity to the poor and to the Church?
