HOMILY OF EASTER MONDAY: YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “DO NOT BE AFRAID. GO TELL MY BROTHERS TO GO TO GALILEE, AND THERE THEY WILL SEE ME.”

Acts 2:14,22-33, Psalm 15:1-2,5,7-11, Matthew 28:8-15
He is risen indeed. People reacted differently to the story. The disciples’ fears were dissipated as they encountered their Master as the Lord of life, who has trounced death by his passion and crucifixion. The darkness of Good Friday’s experience is trumped by the light of Easter Sunday morning. While the unbelievers denied the reality and plotted ways to perpetrate their lies, believers worshipped, were emboldened and bore witness to God’s saving presence amongst them. Those who first responded were sent on mission to other disciples to proclaim that Jesus lives. Their witness was consistent.

What God promised through the ages, He has accomplished and fulfilled in Jesus, the Christ. He came to undo the damage done by human disobedience and rebellion. By his death, he ransomed us from sin and death, has given us new life and reconciled us to God. In baptism, we were united with Jesus’ sacrifice and victory. Like the first disciples, we too have become witnesses. We must bear that message and bring it wherever we go and have it delivered, welcome or unwelcome. Like the Jewish leaders, people will continue to discountenance and deny God’s presence amongst us and try to replace faith with all kinds of deceptive and alluring ideologies. We must continue to resist such dark orientations with the light of the gospel, by word and action. The best weapon we have in that battle is an ever-closer intimacy with the risen Lord. Communion with him spurs the courage and inspiration needed for the battles ahead.
Risen Lord, preserve us as we take refuge in you and help us to be your credible witnesses. Amen.
