HOMILY OF FRIDAY 10TH WEEK OF THE ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: ENCOUNTERING GOD FOR SAFETY
BY: Joseph Nyarko
1 Kings 19:9,11-16/Psalm 27:7-9,13-14/Matthew 5:27-32
One of the great feelings in life is to celebrate victory at the location of success. God accomplished a glorious victory through prophet Elijah and it would have been great for him to stay and celebrate that glory. But it was not possible because of the threat of Jezebel. Elijah had to run for dear life. It is very instructive to note that he ran to God and know at that person. In challenging moments, it is okay to escape but make sure you escape to God’s presence.

The discovery of God’s presence is not same for everyone. In numbers 11:30-35, god visited Israel through mighty winds to provide quails for food when they have asked for meat. Then in exodus 14:21, God used wind to push back the Red Sea for Israel to walk on dry grounds through the sea. In Exodus 3, God encounters Moses through the burning bush. But Elijah encountered God in a small, gentle breeze. God does not use a single method to encounter his people. What is important to note is that God always give peace to those who encounter Him.
We should never allow anything to prevent us from encountering God. Elijah left the grounds of celebration to encounter God. Any lifestyle, behaviour and situation that prevents us from encountering God must be discarded. Nothing beats God’s presence. To encounter God is life and this must be our absolute desire all through life.
