HOMILY OF FRIDAY 15TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “FOR THE SON OF MAN IS LORD OF THE SABBATH”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Isaiah 38:1-6,21-22,7-8/Psalm: Isaiah 38:10-12,16/Matthew 12:1-8

Today’s miraculous healing of King Hezekiah, the last great king of Jerusalem, is a lesson on faith, trust and hope. If Hezekiah simply resigned himself to fate when he received the first prophetic message concerning his illness, he would have died in no time. Rather than languish in self-pity and misery, he again turned to the Lord, the author of life, from whom the initial prophecy was generated to plead for mercy and to negotiate himself out of the deadly prognosis.

It is in prayer that we speak to God about our lives and our troubles. Hezekiah teaches us that lesson. God did not only restore his health and give him fifteen more years. He went further to take care of national and international problems at the time that would have been sources of great distress to Hezekiah. Hezekiah gave all the glory to his God and went in praise and thanksgiving to God’s house. Some of us would have simply said: “I was very lucky, I would have died but for a and b,” and gone celebrating without any reference to God. Often in our lives, we receive the kind of prognosis, prophecy or report that Hezekiah received, concerning ourselves or someone we know/love. We must learn never to give up at such times, but go rather to God and pray our way through such calamitous times. I pray that the Lord will hear our prayers and reverse such evil prognosis, prophecies or reports in our lives, especially concerning our health, even when they are true and accurate. It takes faith, confidence and trust, like Hezekiah, to negotiate one’s way out of trouble at such times. Realizing that God is merciful and kind and understands our situation, unlike the Pharisees in the gospel, is what gives us such confidence and faith. We must imitate God in his mercy, kindness and understanding toward us and shun judgmental and cruel ways in our dealings with others.

Christ, Lord of the Sabbath, have mercy on us and heal us of our infirmities. Amen.
