HOMILY OF FRIDAY, 2ND WEEK OF LENT — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: OVERCOMING HATRED
BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa
Genesis 37:3-4,12-13,17-28, Psalm 104:16-21, Matthew 21:33-43,45-46
A preacher once said, “Love, friendship, and respect do not unite people as much as a common hatred for something.”* Hatred united the sons of Israel in conspiring against their brother Joseph. They hated him because their father loved him more than the others (see Genesis 37:3-4). Out of jealousy, they plotted to kill him but later sold him to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt. Yet, through God’s providence, Joseph rose to power in Egypt and later saved his brothers and family from famine. He became the proverbial *stone rejected by the builders that became the cornerstone.

Joseph’s story mirrors that of Jesus, who was also hated, rejected, and persecuted by the Elders, Chief Priests, Scribes, and Pharisees. Despite being despised, He became the Savior of the world. In the Parable of the Wicked Tenants, Jesus describes these haters as ruthless tenants who killed the heir. We, too, can sometimes be trapped in emotions of hatred, jealousy, and envy. However, prolonged negative emotions like fear, anger, and bitterness can poison our hearts, harm our spiritual growth, and even affect our physical health. This Lenten season invites us to reflect: Can we replace hatred and bitterness with love and kindness?
