HOMILY OF FRIDAY WITHIN CHRISTMAS OCTAVE — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: WHO ARE YOU?

BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa

1 John 2:22-28; Psalm 97(98):1-4; John 1:19-28

The Greek philosopher Socrates underscores the importance of self-awareness, and his strong message to everyone is “Know thyself.” John knew who he was and what his mission on earth was. “When the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, ‘Who are you?’ He confessed… ‘I am not the Christ.’” And they further asked him if he was Elijah or the prophet. They asked again, “Who are you?” Lastly, they asked, “What do you say about yourself?”

He clearly stated, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord.’” We all must discover who we are and what God wants us to accomplish in the world. St. Theresa of Avila succinctly explains why self-knowledge is necessary. She says, “All our trials and disturbances come from not understanding ourselves.” Self-knowledge is so important for human development, and that is the reason why Dan Coleman, author of *Emotional Intelligence*, says emotional intelligence begins with self-awareness.

Self-discovery is a lifetime exercise. For us Christians, there is no greater identity than the fact that we are made in the image and likeness of God. Simply put, it is enough to say, “I am a child of God” (cf. Romans 8:17; Galatians 3:26). Do I know myself well enough, and have I discovered the mission which God has given to me?
