HOMILY OF HOLY THURSDAY (MAUNDY THURSDAY) — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT I HAVE DONE FOR YOU?”

BY: Fr Justus Oruh

Exodus 12:1-8, 11-14; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26; John 13:1-15

(a) In Exodus 12, we read the story of the Passover, the prefiguration of the Last Super which Jesus ate with his Apostles and how powerful the blood of the Lamb pasted on the door post of the people of God could be.

(b)The priests in the Old Testament usually offer lambs for the remission of sins. On this day, Christ offered himself instead of using an animal. He became the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world. He became the priest and the offer and established that this offer would ever continue in his memory. He asks us today, do you realize what I have done for you? If the lamb of goats and lambs could to some extent clease and save the people, says the letter to the Hebrews, how much more the blood of Christ, the Lamb of God without blemish! Christ is the priest and the Holy Communion, the Lamb that is offered and given to us. He gave us his body and blood which obtains for us the mercy of God. “When I see the blood, I will pass over you”- What a power in the Holy Eucharist. Christ asks us, do you realize what I have done for you?” If we do, we would always be thankful to God in life, which is the actual meaning of the Holy Eucharist – Thanksgiving.

(c) After the last super, he began to wash the feet of the Apostles. The washing of the feet is usually the assignment of the servants of the house. Christ took upon himself the work of a servant and began to serve those entrusted to him. He added, “Do you realize what I have done for you”, “I have given you an example“, “wash the feet of one another” We are called to serve. We lead by serving. An example for all and for all in leadership posts. In this service we realized the the beauty of our life, we experience the fulfillment of our Life; in this service, the meaning of our life come to lime-light. Could we image, Christ came, just to serve. He will even die for the sake of our sins. He asks us, “do you realize what I have done for you?
