HOMILY OF HOLY THURSDAY (MAUNDY THURSDAY) — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: UBI CARITAS ET AMOR!
BY: Fr. Oselumhense Anetor
Exodus 12:1-8, 11-14; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26; John 13:1-15
There is a sense in which all the readings in the evening today are about love. It was out of love that the angel of death passed over the Israelites in the first reading. The Egyptians were not that lucky. St Paul recalls that Jesus gave himself to his disciples in an unbloody manner, to show exactly the price he was to pay for our sins out of the love he had for us. When we celebrate the Mass, we do not focus on the blood, but on the salvation that that blood wrought for us. Thus, indeed, the blessing cup that we bless is in communion with the blood of Christ.

Friends, if Jesus himself could take off his garments, to wash the dirty feet of his disciples, why then do we put on airs? We must be ready to humble ourselves and show love to our brothers and sisters. This is what ‘communion’ should be about. Indeed ubi caritas et amor, Deus tibi est (where charity and love is, God is there). May we not be like Judas who refused to change his mind even after the Lord washed his feet. Is there something blocking our abilities to love and be loved today? Take it to the Lord in prayer. At Chrism Mass this morning, the Bishop will bless the Oils of Chrism, Catechumen, and the Sick. Then the Priests will in love for God and their Bishop, renew their Priestly vows and commitments. May the Love of God find a place in us today. AMEN.
Good morning dear. Happy celebration of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper.
