HOMILY OF HOLY TRINITY — YEAR A
HOMILY OF HOLY TRINITY — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Ex 34: 4 – 9, 2 Cor 13: 11 – 13, Jn 3: 16 – 18
With the above blessing, every Mass begins, acknowledging and celebrating the magnanimity of our Trinitarian God. It summarizes today’s readings. Following the fall of our first parents, God restored humanity by initiating a covenantal relationship, with Israel as the primary contact. When that initiative got repeatedly frustrated, God moved one step higher by initiating direct contact with humanity, through Jesus Christ his beloved Son.

In obedience to the Father, he took on human nature to save us, and with the Father, sent us the Holy Spirit to sustain the fruits of his redemptive passion, death and resurrection, this time with the church as the primary locus for sustaining the new covenantal relationship. Whenever we make the Sign of the Cross, we faithfully reaffirm this divine involvement in our life and obediently recommit ourselves to the fact that we are God’s belonging; called to love and communion with the Blessed Trinity. “We can never understand God, or…three Persons in one nature.” “The revelation of God as love is a personal revelation, inviting us to a response in love, inviting us into a personal relationship with God as love. All the instructions that God gives us are simply meant to show us what that love means and how we can respond to it and stay close to God as God’s own people. In the beginning man and woman were made in the image of God, and if I am to remain close to God, I must shape my desires, my activities, my relationships to be like those of God.” “The basis of our relationship with God “is Jesus’ own prayer, in which he called God ‘Abba,’ the dignified and affectionate word’ in Aramaic ‘by which a son addressed his father.” Jesus encouraged us to use the same form of address. “It is, however, only because Christ has given us his Spirit as our spirit that we can do so. This Spirit is also the Spirit of the Father…The Spirit gives us access to the Father and the Son…In this way the Trinity, each Person in a different way, imparts to us the love of God and draws us into God’s own love.
God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit; sustain us with grace, love and fellowship. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
