HOMILY OF MONDAY 15TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: “CEASE TO DO EVIL. LEARN TO DO GOOD”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Isaiah 1:10-17, Psalm 50:8-9,16-17,21,23, Matthew 10:34-11:1
In today’s liturgy, Jesus concludes His instructions on mission to his disciples, by reminding them to put God first and above all: nothing/no-one must come between them and Christ. In addition to warning them of the discomfort that they would experience as disciples, Jesus assured them that they will be welcomed by some and who ever welcomed them will be rewarded accordingly.

We are the ones who receive those instructions today. We must remain firm in our Christian conviction and witness and put God over and above all. We feature on both sides of the equation. Just as we must bear God’s word and witness courageously, whether welcomed or unwelcomed, so also must we heed and welcome other bearers of God’s word, and more importantly, accommodate those closest to God’s heart, namely, the oppressed, orphans, and widows (Isa 1:17), for the sake of Christ. In ceasing to do evil and learning to do good, as reflected in the summons of today’s first reading, those closest to God’s heart must find welcome with us and should be our preoccupation. That list expands daily because of the rut in our society, and they are the hardest hit when disasters and economic hardships overwhelm us. We must find a place in our hearts for them no matter how little we have to share. God will replenish.
Lord, forgive our insensitivity; increase our ability to share. Amen.
