HOMILY OF MONDAY 16TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: THE SINNER TURNED SAINT!

BY: Fr. Oselumhense Anetor

Sng of sngs. 3:1-4; John 20:1-2,11-18

Some beautiful young ladies stood along one particular area as we drove past years ago, in Abuja. They were there to wave at passersby, in hope of getting ‘picked up’ for the night. I have seen similar sights on the streets of Lagos, Benin and even Ekpoma. It’s not unlikely for us to look at these ladies and conclude that they shall go straight to hell. But Mary Magdalene, though she was seen as a public sinner, teaches us that there is salvation for the repentant sinner; yes! From the demon-possessed to the prostitute.

Mary Magdalene is no ordinary Apostle of Jesus. This is exactly why Pope Francis, on June 10, 2016, raised her celebration to the dignity of a “feast”, just like any other Apostle of Jesus. We know she’s the one who was rid of seven devils; she was also one of the very first persons to adore the Lord and make him known after his resurrection. The western tradition holds that she was also the public sinner who wiped the feet of Jesus, as well as the sister of Lazarus and Martha. Her actual identity notwithstanding, what truly matters is that though this woman had a past that was not so wonderful, she found a future that was truly enviable in Christ. Can we imitate her example?

Prayer
Let us pray for those under the manipulation of the enemy, those who are struggling with sexual perversions of all kinds, and those who already stand condemned by public sentiments, that they may find a present and a future with Christ Jesus today, Amen.

Good morning dear. God bless your week ahead.
