HOMILY OF MONDAY 17TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “YES LORD, I BELIEVE THAT YOU ARE THE CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD, THE ONE WHO WAS TO COME INTO THIS WORLD.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

1 John 4:7-16; Psalm 33(34):2-11; John 11:19-27

Martha, Mary and Lazarus were known for three things. They were fiercely loyal friends to the Lord; they were always very hospitable to Jesus and his friends; and they were people of firm faith, who always treasured Jesus’ company. All of these traits are wonderfully attested in the Johannine narratives on that relationship in John 11 and 12, the reason they had the confidence during moments of trial to announce to Jesus; “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” Their confidence yielded results. When Jesus made a declaration of his divine power and the gift of the resurrection in his person, and then asked for their assent of faith, “do you believe this?” They did not hesitate to respond: “Yes, Lord…”

Jesus loves us just as he loved this wonderful family. Jesus is very much at home with us, especially those who open their hearts and home to him, just as he was with this model family. Jesus is present at our meals, in our rejoicing, in our sorrows, in our grief, in our distress and suffering, in our accomplishments and successes. Whatever the situation is in our lives and families, let us maintain that closeness and friendship and remain fiercely loyal to this best of friends: for, indeed, “what a friend we have in Jesus!” Even though they felt like Jesus was not with them, and that was why their brother died, we know from the beginning of John 11 that Jesus was actually always with them and knew about what they were going through, even if he was not physically present there. Just like he did for the disciples in the storm when they thought he did not care about them because he was asleep, he proved to the family in the resurrection of Lazarus that he was always with them. Jesus is always with us; in our boat amidst the storms of life. He will calm the troubled seas of our life’s experiences and raise us up. But, can we be faithful, trusting and loyal friends to him in good times and in bad, loving him as Mary demonstrated in John 12 by always giving the best of ourselves and what we have?

Lord Jesus, our savior, brother and friend, calm the storms that threaten our lives daily; raise us up from all that holds us down in this life; and bring us to eternal life through your gift of the resurrection to eternal life in heaven. Amen.
