HOMILY OF MONDAY 9TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: TAKING CARE OF GOD’S GARDEN
BY: Fr Deotacious Chikontwe SMA
2 Pet. 1: 2-7, Ps. 91, Mark 12: 1-12
Introduction
Welcome to our reflection for today. Today, the Church remembers a brave man named Saint Justin, Martyr.
Our liturgical readings of today, show us two totally different ways to treat the gifts God gives us. In the Gospel of Mark, we hear a story about greedy workers who refuse to share the harvest with the landowner. They even kill the owner’s son. But in the First Reading, Saint Peter shows us a beautiful path of growing in faith. He reminds us that God has already given us everything we need to live a good life.

From our Gospel reading
In the Gospel, Jesus tells a story about a landowner who plants a beautiful vineyard (a grape garden). He fixes everything perfectly and rents it out to workers. But when it is time to collect the fruit, the workers become greedy. They beat up the servants sent by the owner. Finally, the owner sends his own son, thinking they will respect him. Instead, they kill the son so they can steal the land.
Jesus told this story to warn the leaders of His time, but it is also a warning for us. God has given us so many gifts: our lives, our families, and our talents. Sometimes, we act like those greedy workers. We want to do whatever we want, and we ignore God when He asks us to be kind, patient, or helpful to others.
From our First Reading
Saint Peter gives us the answer to this problem in the First Reading. He writes that God’s power has given us everything we need to live a holy life. We do not have to do it alone. Peter gives us a list of steps to climb every day to grow closer to God:
Start with Faith.
Add Goodness (doing the right thing).
Add Knowledge (learning about God).
Add Self-control (controlling our bad desires).
Add Patience (not giving up when things are hard).
Add Devotion (loving God).
Add Kindness (being a good friend).
Finish with Love (caring for others more than ourselves).
The greedy workers chose selfishness and lost everything. Saint Justin chose to climb this ladder of love and won eternal life in heaven.
What We Learn
The Main Lesson: Jesus is the “cornerstone”—the most important stone in the building. Even if the world rejects Him, we must build our lives on Him.
Look for the Truth: Saint Justin teaches us to never stop learning about our faith.
You Have What It Takes: Saint Peter reminds us that God already gave us the grace to be good. We just need to try our best.
Don’t Be Greedy with Your Life: Remember that everything we have belongs to God. We should use our time and talents to help others, not just ourselves.
Conclusion
As we go about our week, let us remember that our lives belong to God. The world might not always understand why we follow Jesus, just like the Roman rulers did not understand Saint Justin.
But we know that following Jesus is the only way to true happiness. Let us take one step up the ladder of goodness today by being kind, patient, and loving to the people around us.
Saint Justin, pray for us.
