HOMILY OF PRESENTATION OF THE LORD — YEAR C
HOMILY THEME: Presentation of the Lord in the Temple/Candle Mass

Malachi 3:1-4; Hebrews 2:14-18; Luke 2:22-40
(a) The parents of Jesus presented the Child Jesus in the Temple before God and the people according to the tradition and thus fulfilling all the required rites as described. This speaks of the faithfulness of the Family to their Faith, religion and tradition. In this Faith Jesus was raised and He grew in wisdom and fear of God as described. A call to parents to assist in bringing up their children in Faith.

(b) In this occasion, the Family met also the “Temple people”- Simeon and Anna. Simeon was said to have been moved by the Spirit to enter the Temple. Anna worship God in the Temple day and night. It was a culture that finds fulfillment of Life visiting the Temple of God. With Christ and with these “Temple people” we present ourselves to God “daily” in prayers and worship. In this way we become familiar to God day and night. The human life (as we see in Simeon) is fulfilled in this contact with God. Fulfilled he said, “now I can go in peace, my eyes have seen the salvation, a light to the gentiles…”
(c) This Feast is also called the Candle Mass or Light Mass perhaps delineated from the words of the Holy Simeon, seeing Jesus presented in the Temple. Christ who is presented is the Light to us who dispels all forms of darkness in our hearts; fears, doubts, hopelessness, perplexity and sadness of life. With lighted candles, which we received also during our baptism, we join Christ in dispelling the darkness and sins of this world. May this light shine upon us.
