HOMILY OF SATURDAY 10TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: “YOU ARE MY INHERITANCE, O LORD”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
1 Kings 19:19-21; Psalm 15(16):1-2, 5, 7-10; Matt 5:33-37
As Elijah executed the instruction that he received from God on the Mountain; Elisha left everything, including occupation and his family, and followed him in response to a prophetic call, to serve God during challenging times.

The mindset that the Lord is our portion or inheritance (today’s psalm) facilitates such wholesome responses to God’s call. It enables us to wholeheartedly make the sacrifices demanded of us in response to God’s call, just like the Prophet Elisha. It challenges us to review and evaluate our individual responses, including the excuses we offer for not responding wholeheartedly. Like Elijah-Elisha, God never forces us. He simply awaits our resolve to leave behind whatever holds us down, whatever is in competition with Him, so we may follow wholeheartedly, NOW. Jesus, in the Sermon on the Mount today, invites us to live sincere lives, characterized by the trustworthiness of our word, confession and commitment. No duplicity or equivocality; a life where YES means YES and NO means NO.
Lord, give grace to follow you unconditionally. Amen.
