HOMILY OF SUNDAY 25TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: “You want something and you haven’t got it; so you are prepared to kill. You have an ambition that you cannot satisfy; so you fight to get your way by force.”

Wisdom 2:12, 17-20 / James 3:16-4:3 / Mark 9:30-37
These words from St. James and today’s first reading characterize the lifestyle of some of us. We spend so much time plotting the downfall or ruin of others, either so that we may climb at their expense or ruin them. St. James notes that the kind of envy, jealousy and ambition that breed such evil intents only yield wars, battles and disharmony within the family, church community, society or any organization where these have taken root.

The contrary virtue to such evil will is peacemaking, bridge-building and sowing seeds that lead to holiness of life. Jesus, in today’s gospel, cautions us against such jealousy and unbridled ambition as his disciples struggled and jostled for positions with one another upon hearing of Jesus’ impending death. They were not even concerned about his predicament. They were more self-absorbed, selfishly seeking what was in it for them. Jesus recommends two virtues: childlike simplicity-humility and trust. Additionally, he urges selfless commitment to the plight of the less privileged members of the community, who, like children, remain vulnerable in a world that is so exploitative and indifferent.
Lord, heal us, our families, your Church and our society of the evils of envy, jealousy, unguarded ambition, selfishness and indifference; and please deliver us from the claws of enemies and detractors. Amen.
