HOMILY OF THE 11TH MONDAY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “We appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

2 Corinthians 6:1-10, Ps. 98:1-4, Matthew 5:38-42

St. Paul’s exhortation in today’s first reading is great food for thought, especially for leaders. To all, Paul encourages us to live fruitful lives as we could be called to account at any time. Procrastination in this regard is disastrous. Now is the time for positive action in response to God’s grace.

As he details the great sacrifices he made on behalf of Christ’s flock, he challenges all Church leaders to undergo the necessary disciplines and make the sacrifices needed for them to ensure the salvation of souls. Under the Holy Spirit, they must be nurtured in virtue in their battle against sin and evil. In relation to the world, their willingness to suffer deprivation, hardships, calumny and rejection in order to preserve the grace, integrity and virtue that sustain their work as disciples and leaders distinguishes them. That is what true servant leaders are made of and we need them to fix the brokenness we face in our families, communities, churches, and state. We must all also take seriously Jesus’ injunction for us to shun revenge. The examples in today’s gospel move us to a level of charity where retaliation becomes inconceivable. Knowing when to back off is not a weakness. It is wisdom. Deciding not to repay evil with evil only comes from people with distinctively mature character and Christ-like hearts; in imitation of Lord himself. Vengeance is weakness and only extends the vicious cycle of violence. Letting go builds bridges and fosters peace from the strength of godliness.

Lord, teach us forgiveness; and may we trust in your justice and love. Amen.
