HOMILY OF THE 1ST TUESDAY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: ALL POWER BELONGS TO GOD!
BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor
Heb 2:5-12; Psalm 8:2, 5-9; Mark 1:21-28
An African proverb says, “if the snake had not proven its worth, women would have been using it to tire firewood.” Think about the power and authority we have been given as sons and daughters of God. The letter to the Hebrews puts it aptly, “What is man that thou art mindful of him, or the son of man that thou carest for him?” Ps. 8 had earlier made reference to this, “yet you have made him little lower than the angels, with glory and honour you crowned him, gave him power over the works of your hands, you put all things under his feet…”

Friends, what do we do with the power and authority we have been given in Christ Jesus? Don’t forget that Jesus Christ taught with so much authority that even demons testified. He was not like the scribes. We too are called to exercise the authority we have. We must not begin to jump around from Church to Church like people without faith, or interpret every situation as demonic. We must wash ourselves clean of sin, drive away guilt, and put the devil in his place. Above all, in dealing with one another, we must avoid using authority without charity, which is tyranny. God help us all, Amen.
Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead.
