HOMILY OF THE 23RD FRIDAY ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: THAT THEY MAY SEE

BY: Fr Deotacious Chikontwe SMA

Luke 6:39-42

Good morning, everyone,
Our readings today from Timothy and Luke give us an important message about forgiveness, grace, and how we see ourselves and others.

Seeing the Speck, Missing the Log

In the Gospel, Jesus asks a powerful question: “Can a blind person guide a blind person?” He’s not talking about physical blindness but spiritual blindness. He’s warning us about being hypocrites. We are quick to point out the small faults of others—the “speck” in their eye—while completely ignoring our own huge problems—the “log” in our own eye.

This “log” is our own pride and our bad habits that we refuse to see. It makes us judgmental and keeps us from truly helping others. Before we can even think about helping someone else, we have to look at ourselves first and admit our own mistakes.

From Persecutor to Apostle

The reading from 1 Timothy gives us a perfect example of this. The Apostle Paul openly admits he was once a “blasphemer” and a “persecutor.” He had a giant “log” in his eye. Yet, he says, he “received mercy.” It wasn’t because he was a good person; it was because of God’s incredible grace.

Paul’s story shows us that no one is beyond saving. No matter what we’ve done in the past, God’s grace is bigger than all our sins. This grace doesn’t just forgive us; it changes us. It turned a man who once hurt others into a man who now preaches the good news.

A Call for Humility

So, what does this mean for us today? It’s a call to be humble and merciful. We aren’t called to be perfect leaders. We are called to be humble servants who, knowing we need God’s grace ourselves, can then show that same grace to others.
Let’s pray for the courage to look at our own faults. Let’s ask God to help us see others with the same mercy He shows us. When we do this, we can truly help others find their way, not because we are so wise, but because of God’s endless grace.

May You All Have A Blessed Friday
