HOMILY OF THE 25TH FRIDAY ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “BUT WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM?”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
One of the greatest realizations that came out of the destruction of the first Temple by the Babylonians in 586BC and the inability of anyone to replicate the magnificence and beauty of Solomon’s Temple is the realization that such beauty and magnificence can only be replicated in the lives of God’s people, in whom God is pleased to make a new dwelling place. Hence, the affirmation that: “God dwells in the praises of His people” (Psalm 22:3), an explication of that realization.

As God spoke of the restoration of that beauty in today’s reading, He reassures His people of His abiding presence with them, urging them to be courageous and faithful. For such a people, the only temple that would replicate and surpass Solomon’s Temple would be the one not built by human hands, God’s eternal dwelling place in heaven, prepared by God Himself for those who live and die in Christ (Heb 9:11). For that dwelling to be ours, we need to continue to be under the rule of Jesus, the Christ of God, whom Peter confessed on our behalf in today’s gospel. To know Christ is to be drawn into him. Such intimacy and oneness are defined by what we do with our lives daily, in response to Jesus’ question: “Who do your say that I am?”
Jesus, Son of Man, coming in the ages; bring us to new life in you. Amen.
