HOMILY OF THE 27TH SUNDAY OF THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: OUR RESPONSE TO GOD´S OFFER OF SALVATION

BY: Fr. Casmir Nkamuke

Is. 5:1-7; Phil. 4:6-9; Matt. 21:33-43

Today, we are reminded of the consequences of our acceptance or rejection of God´s offer of salvation.

In the song against the Lord´s vineyard, God, through the prophet Isaiah rebukes the house of Israel and the men of Judah for refusing to reciprocate his loving kindness with mercy and integrity. As the new Israel, God warns us that we ought to respond to his offer of salvation with justice and integrity. The resultant effects of our indifference or rejection of God are the evident increase. bitterness, enmity, selfishness, violence and catastrophe in our society.

St. Paul urges us to always present our worries and challenges to God, assuring us that true peace is found in God. Also, he reminds us that our vocation as children of God ought to manifest in the good, pure, worthy and virtuous lifestyles we exhibit at every moment of our lives.

In the parable of the wicked servants, Jesus reminds us that the rejection of God’s offer of salvation results in rejection from his kingdom. Like the vineyard, God created everything good. Like the servants, he has made us caretakers of our society. Like the audience in the gospel, we can choose to be either a nation that bears fruit or one that fights to eliminate God from the world and take over his vineyard.

Beloved in the Lord, we are God´s vineyard. God has spared nothing in his bid to save us. In times past, he sent his prophets to lead us in the way of salvation. At the fullness of time, he sent his only begotten son. He took human form to offer us a share of his divinity. There is no love as great as this! He is the rejected cornerstone. He suffered humiliation and rejection to save us.

God has done everything to offer us salvation. The important thing is our response to this offer of salvation. When we respond to him positively by striving each day to increase in virtue, love, justice and integrity, we will transform our society and feel his salvation here and here after. When, on the contrary, we try to eliminate him and his messengers from the world, the kingdom of God will be taken away from us and given to nations that bears fruit. Today, God reminds all facing trials, challenges and oppressions of various sorts on account of their firm faith in him that they are guaranteed of their salvation. On the other hand, he confronts the unbelievers and oppressors and reminds them that the only guarantee to a better life is trusting in God and doing him will.

May God give us the grace to trust him and do his will. May he help us respond to his offer of salvation with the good fruits of love, justice and integrity we manifest in our daily lives.

Happy Sunday!
