HOMILY OF THE 30TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: YOUR FAITH HAS SAVED YOU!
BY: Fr. Casmir Nkamuke
Jeremiah 31:7-9; Hebrews 5:1-6; Mark 10:46-52
Faith is the theological virtue that helps us to always trust and rely on divine providence and in all life situations. In the Liturgy of today, we are invited to embrace a strong and resilient faith in God, especially amidst the challenges we face in our present world that often leads to despair and despondency.

The prophecy of Jeremiah in the first reading was given shortly before the destruction of Jerusalem. Amidst the imminent destruction and challenges, Jeremiah proclaims salvation for God’s people. This shows us that God never abandons his people, and that light will always emerge victorious over darkness and at every moment.
In the epistle to the Hebrew, Jesus Christ, the great high priest, is described as one who sympathises with us in our ignorance and our uncertainty. An ignorant person needs help to know, while one who is uncertain needs the assurance of a superior to continue in the right (though most times challenging) track. Our Lord Jesus Christ, the saviour and redeemer of the world, gives us light to overpower the darkness of ignorance. As the good shepherd, he guides us along the right path, assuring us that though the journey be tough, he is always with us as a rock and shield.
In the gospel reading of today, Bartimaeus expressed resilient faith in God to rescue him from his situation. He did not allow the crowd to shut him up in his quest for salvation. He did receive his healing, with a commendation that his faith has cured him.
In our world today, many factors challenge, weaken, and most times extinguish our faith in God. Like Bartimeus, desire to conform to worldly standards, life challenges, and ambitions in life tend to shut us up in our firm resolve to uphold our faith in God. Such negative influences tend to make us give up on ourselves and on God.
Beloved in the Lord, like the crowd told Bartimeus in the gospel passage, God is calling us to trust in him and rely on his never-failing promises. Like Bartimeus, we need to respond to this call with courage and resilience. The steadfastness of the Lord never fails. His mercies are unending. When we believe in him and rely on him, we will stand firm. When we resiliently trust in God in spite of all our challenges, our faith will not only cure us of our challenges and ignorance, but also gain for the fullness of life in this life and eternal happiness in the fullness of the world to God.
May God give us the courage to stand firmly on our faith in spite of all challenges and the contradictory standards of the world that stand against our faith. May our faith in God constantly remind us that God is always with us, and that he will never abandon us. May we find peace and joy more in our trust on divine providence, than in our conformity to the standards of the society.
Happy Sunday
