HOMILY OF THE 30TH WEDNESDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: “Try your best to enter through the narrow door…”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Eph 6:1-9; Psalm 144(145):10-14; Luke 13:22-30
Jesus warns us once more to be really serious about our Christian commitment. We must not live pretentious lives, professing one thing and living in a different way. Duplicity and deception must be shunned even as we take on the virtues that are demanded of us as disciples. The narrow door through which Jesus directs us if we want to be saved is the door that those who take the discipline of Christian discipleship seriously pass through, uncomplaining, uncompromising and enduring on the path of Christian discipleship. It is not easy but has the light of eternal life in heaven at the end of that narrow way. The narrow way demands that we shed the excess weight and excess luggage that we bring along with us on life’s journey, all the unnecessary burdens that the allures of this world and our desires place upon us; those are the reasons that people would try “to enter and will not succeed.”

Resentment, anger, greed, unbridled ambition, an unforgiving heart, grudge, insatiable appetite for money, wealth, power and influence, and ungodliness are all parts of such excess luggage. Heeding St. Paul’s injunction to fulfill our family obligations as spouses, parents, children, household members and friends is part of the discipline of discipleship. As part of that discipline, St. Paul reminds children to honor their parents and be blessed; and encourages parents not to drive their children to resentment. We are blessings to our families. When we fail to ensure that the entire family enjoys the blessing that we are, we have also failed in Christian discipleship.
Lord, build and strengthen our families in love, unity and peace. Amen.
