HOMILY OF THE 32TH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME: YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: THE WIDOW’S MITE
BY: Fr. Justus Oruh
1 Kg 17:10-16, Heb 9 : 24 – 28, Mk 12:38-44
(a) Jesus was watching people as they give. Many were dropping big money from their surplus. A widow dropped a coin, all she had to live on. I could sense the sound, which the coin made in the offer box. It was a coin, a penny but which drew attention and admiration of Christ.

(b) While others were giving offer from their surplus which costed them nothing, this widow gave an offer that costed her everything, namely, her life. She gave her life just like Christ. The priests of Old Testament as we read in Hebrews, were making altar sacrifices with animals and lambs which costed not their lives but Christ made the alter sacrifice and became the Lamb that was offered.
(b) Giving is offering. The value of this offering is also in what it costs us for the good of others. Each of the sacrifices we make (like giving our time, money, presence, services, etc for the good of others and community) which cost us something, is like giving our entire self, We give not because we have them surplus. Here in the New Testament, the concept of 1/10, the Tithe loses it meaning, if one gives the entire self. The self is bigger than what it possesses. This sacrifices for the love of others that costs us something wins the administration of God, even if they are quantifiably small like the widow’s mite.
