HOMILY OF THE 3RD MONDAY OF EASTER — YEAR A

HOMILY OF THE 3RD MONDAY OF EASTER — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Acts 6:8-15, Ps. 119:23-24,26-27,29-30, John 6:22-29
The mighty deeds of Jesus in John’s gospel are called signs, not miracles. That is because they point beyond themselves to greater realities. They invite us to look beyond them to something more profound; usually to greater insights into who Jesus really is, with the aim of drawing us into faith and intimacy with him. So, as the Jews came seeking Jesus, following the feeding of the 5000, Jesus pointed beyond the event that attracted them to the real phenomenon to which they were attracted: “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.” In him, they will find real nourishment; the imperishable bread of life that the Father gives from heaven. That is the gift that we receive at every Eucharist.

The Eucharistic import of the discourse is already betrayed in the mention that they ate the bread after Jesus had given thanks (eucharistesantos, in Greek), the word from which we derive the English Eucharist. Let us strengthen our Eucharistic communion with Jesus, who humbled himself to unite with himself with us so that we may become God’s presence in our world. The Eucharist is the greatest opportunity of encounter with the Lord. Let us not take it lightly or for granted. It is the source and summit of our lives, as individuals and as Church. Today’s first reading introduces the encounters that ultimately led to the martyrdom of Stephen, because of his faith in Christ. His detractors were simply evil. False and shameless accusations of blasphemy were levelled against him so that they could get rid of him, but he stayed focused on his ultimate goal in life, union with Christ. People continue to contrive false accusations and shameless lies that viciously destroy other people’s lives because of ambition, hatred, envy or sheer wickedness. Jesus calls us to the way that endures, Truth. Anything else is from the devil.
Lord, deliver us from the evil one and his agents. Amen.
