HOMILY OF THE 3RD SUNDAY IN ADVENT — YEAR C

HOMILY THEME: “WHAT SHALL WE DO”?

BY: Fr. Justus Oruh

Zeph 3:14-18a; Phil 4:4-7; Lk 3:10-18

(a) One who has the lost joy and happiness in life has lost everything, even if he/she possesses in large quantities every other thing. Happiness is the end of human person which should not be compromised.

(b) The 3rd Sunday of Advent (called “Gaudete” Sunday- “be joyful” teaches and bids us to be happy and rejoice: ‘be glad, and rejoice with all thy heart” – (Zephaniah 3:14). “Rejoice in the LORDS ALWAYS, again I say rejoice”. We have every reason to be happy and glad as the psalmist says, “for great in our midst is the Holy one of Israel” (Isaiah 12:6). God is the cause of our Happiness; and the Joy of the Lord is my strength (Nehemiah 8:10).

(c) “What shall we do”? (Lk. 3:10). This is the turning point in conversion. People from all “walks of life”- the publicans, simple people are, the tax-collectors, Pharisees, traders, soldiers were coming to John asking, “what shall we then do” in order to gain this Happiness and joy? The answers he gave them are for us. In the name of Christmas season, “do violence to no one, do not hike prices of things unnecessarily, be contented with what you have, do not steal and cheat to make money in the name of the Christmas season, give people their due wages at the proper time, assist people, “he that hath two coats, let him give to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do in like manner” (Lk.3:11). In the name of the season make things rather easier for people. These are the things that make man happy. Do works of Charity to others for the sake of God this season.
