HOMILY OF THE 3RD SUNDAY IN EASTER — YEAR C

HOMILY OF THE 3RD SUNDAY IN EASTER — YEAR C
HOMILY THEME: “FEED MY LAMBS… FOLLOW ME.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Acts 5:27-32.40-41, Rev 5:11-14, John 21:1-19
This is the first Sunday of May, Our Mother Mary’s special month. May she continue to intercede for us and carry us safely through this month. In addition to the post-resurrection apparition readings in Easter Liturgies, this Sunday presents additional elements that were instrumental in shaping the future of the Church.

Jesus did not only go looking for the disciples, who scandalously now went to their old ways, and reinstated them, he also rehabilitated Peter specially, and entrusted his Church to his care. The threefold process by which Peter reaffirmed his love and loyalty is, of course, linked to the threefold denial by Peter in John 18. But what seems truly remarkable is the repetition of the invitation of Peter to discipleship. Even as he takes up the mantle of the pastoral leadership of Christ’s flock, he must do it according to the mind of Christ and simply as a disciple, who must follow Jesus every step of the way, reminiscent of the Lord’s instruction to “get behind” him after entrusting him with leadership in Matt 16:18-19, 23. Allowing himself to be dragged where he would rather not go is the sign of the total surrender that must accompany his pastoral responsibility and discipleship. But no matter where the journey leads, Jesus will be on hand to provide for his sheep; our lives must, therefore, be lived in faith and trust in him, the slain Lamb, who is entrusted with every authority in heaven and on earth. He exercises that power through the companionship of the Holy Spirit, our co-witness, who journeys with the Church, just as Jesus himself journeyed with the disciples.
Risen Lord, meet us whenever we stray and bring us back to you. Amen.
