HOMILY OF THE 3RD THURSDAY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: LIGHT THAT SHINES
BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa
Heb 10:19-25; Psalm 24: 1-6; Mark 4:21-25
“A bell’s not a bell ’til you ring it – A song’s not a song ’til you sing it – Love in your heart wasn’t put there to stay – Love isn’t love ’til you give it away!” says Oscar Hammerstein. Following Hammerstein’s train of thought, we can also say that light is not light until you make it shine. The purpose of light is to shine. Jesus rightly asks: “Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket or under a bed, and not to be placed on a lampstand?” (Mark 4:21).

He says, “Your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father” (Matthew 5:16). To make our light shine implies sharing our energy and bounteous blessings for the glory of God. Whoever shares his gifts is blessed with more.
Jesus says, “For him who has, more will be given; and from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away” (Mark 4:25). This means the more we share our gifts, the greater blessings we will receive, and the more we share our talents, the more we perfect and sharpen them. The gift of God must not be allowed to waste.
Do we let our light shine by using the gifts, blessings, and talents given to us by God?
