HOMILY OF THE 3RD TUESDAY OF EASTER — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: ANOTHER KIND OF FOOD

Our elders say, “When the pot is empty, the body complains; when the heart is empty, the soul weeps.” We are constantly striving to satisfy our hunger, working tirelessly day and night to ensure we have food on the table and eat well. This effort stems from our basic physiological need to eat and avoid the discomfort of hunger.

Consequently, we dedicate much of our time to fulfilling various forms of human hunger—whether for food, wealth, knowledge, power, sex, comfort, or material possessions. As George Bernard Shaw aptly puts it, “There is no sincerer love than the love of food.” In response to the Israelites’ complaints, the Lord provided them with an abundance of manna and quails.

Centuries later, Jesus lived and preached to the people of Israel. Recognising their physical hunger, Jesus miraculously multiplied bread and fish to feed them. This act drew people to Him, not so much for His teachings but for the food He provided. Sensing their motives, Jesus urged them to seek not the perishable bread but that which endures forever. He declared, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall never be hungry, and he who believes in me shall never be thirsty” (John 6:35). We can tell that breakfast gives us strength for the day and the Eucharist (Communion) gives us strength for the journey of life. How profound is our appreciation and understanding of this bread that nourishes the soul?
