HOMILY OF THE 4TH MONDAY OF ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “THEY IMPLORED JESUS TO DEPART FROM THEM.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Heb 12: 1 – 4, Mk 5: 21 – 43
Often, life’s difficulties compel humans to make hard decisions with serious implications for their spiritual well-being. Such choices often mean that we have to choose between God and the alternative.

Today’s first reading lists Old Testament heroes of faith whose lives were characterized by decisions against anti-God alternatives. They suffered gravely for those choices but God held a promise for them in which they hoped and trusted. The folks in today’s gospel made a choice against having Jesus in their midst. They urged him to leave, and with him, the blessings held in store for them departed from them as well. There are times when the choices we have to make entail a decision to stand with God or against God. Without the faith and courage of the heroes of faith that we celebrate today, fear, anxiety and life’s worries drive a wedge between God and us. Let us be guided by the ultimate goal in the choices we make. If we can shun flattery, deception, empty promises, vain glory and worldly attractions as Jesus did, we will be more prepared to stand with God, irrespective of the circumstances and consequences. Like the man freed from demons, we should see God’s blessings to us as opportunities of praise, thanksgiving and evangelical witness. St. Blaise, whose memorial we celebrate today, is the patron of people with throat infections and deceases. Through his intercession, may God free us from every infection of the throat and grant us health of mind and body.
Lord, cleanse us and strengthen our faith with courage and clarity. Amen.
