HOMILY OF THE 4TH SUNDAY OF EASTER (GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY) — YEAR C
HOMILY OF THE 4TH SUNDAY OF EASTER (GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY) — YEAR C
HOMILY THEME: “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Acts 13:14,43-52; Rev.7:9,14-17; John 10:27-30
The imagery of Shepherd and Sheep that Jesus used to describe the relationship between his disciples and himself evokes love, compassion and care. He does everything for us and demands only one thing of us: to hear his voice, that is, to follow him in total and unalloyed obedience. He gives us eternal life, protects us from the wiles of the evil one, and presents us to the Father, with whom he unites us.

It is in the obedience of the sheep that it knows the love, compassion and care of the shepherd. That is exactly how it works between Christ and us. In communion with him and the Father, we enjoy the full benefits of divine love, compassion and care. Those benefits are highlighted in the second reading where Jesus’ role as Shepherd is once more highlighted as a constant embrace and accompaniment that defies the dangers and distress of human existence, with the aim of bringing those under his care to eternal life with him in heaven. For, he, the “Lamb, who is in the center of the throne, will shepherd them and lead them to springs of life-giving water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” As the first reading celebrates the outbreak of the good news beyond the walls of the initial Jewish enclave to include the Gentile, God’s purpose of expanding the flock of Christ is served by human rejection and persecution as the Jews expelled the disciples from their synagogues and territory. It is Good Shepherd Sunday. Please pray for the shepherds of the Church and pray for holy and committed vocations.
Lord, may your people, the sheep of your flock know your love, compassion and care always. Amen.
