HOMILY OF THE 5TH THURSDAY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “THIS IS AT LAST BONE OF MY BONES AND FLESH OF MY FLESH…”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
The second Creation story notes that God’s work of creating humanity was incomplete until He made the woman, a replica of the man in essence and dignity, giving the man his most adequate companion. The man’s life became complete only upon the gift of that companion that resulted from God’s observation that “it is not good for a man to be alone.” Here the primary reason for the marriage of a man and a woman is “companionship of life and love.” That puts this goal of marriage before the earlier one, stated in the first creation story, procreation.

The joy of the man, when he woke up to see his companion, whose perfect oneness he affirmed (bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh), underscores what God desires for every marriage, especially Christian marriages. That they were naked and not ashamed further cements that oneness, which is synonymous with transparency, sincerity and innocence in marriage. Despite the back and forth, and the struggles that challenge married life, couples should not lose sight of these elements in their marriages, in addition to the constant reminder that God initiated the process and must be kept in it to ensure the fruits celebrated in today’s Psalm. Like the woman in the gospel, marriage, and indeed, life itself, must be approached with a great deal of humility, wisdom and patient endurance. Finally, knowing that we are never alone, whether as couples or individuals, because God is always with us, gets us through our struggles.
Lord, heal breaking and struggling marriages and families. Amen.
