HOMILY OF THE 6TH DAY WITHIN THE OCTAVE OF CHRISTMAS — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

1 John 2:12-17; Psalm 95(96):7-10; Luke 2:36-40

The events that accompanied the Presentation of the Lord, especially the testimonies of Simeon and Anna, are meant to inspire thanksgiving, faith, trust, hope and a missionary spirit in us. We have received good news that we cannot to keep to ourselves. We must spread the word: that God’s love for humanity is a saving love, manifested in the gift of his only Son to the world for our salvation. See how long they waited to see with their eyes. We have beheld that gift freely and much earlier in our lives. Let us spend our lives by allowing the impact of what we have beheld to shape us, even as our witness with the Holy Spirit brings us to announce God’s goodness everywhere. As we do that, we are encouraged to shun the allurements of the world and not allow passing things to swallow us up.

Rather, we must be signs of God’s love to all, by making God’s will paramount in our lives. That is what brings us into communion with God, and when we are one with God, we become light in the darkness around us. We all need to grow just like Jesus: physically, emotionally, affectionately, intellectually, in wisdom, and spiritually. None should happen to the exclusion of the other. Quite often, people grow in many ways except spiritually. Such growth is deficient. The place of God in our lives cannot be exchanged for anything else. Parents must therefore take spiritual growth into consideration as they prepare their children for life. Just as they open their hearts and minds to the world, they must also be taught to maintain a healthy relationship with God by opening their hearts and minds to the Holy Spirit. On a note of prayer: May Christ, who came into the world as an infant and grew up like every child of his time, bless all our children, that they may “grow and become strong, filled with wisdom;” and may God’s favor be upon them.

Father, we are your children; bless us as you blessed Jesus, your Son. Amen.
