HOMILY OF THE 7TH SUNDAY IN THE EASTER — YEAR C

HOMILY THEME: LET THERE BE UNITY

BY: Fr Francis Onwunali

Acts 1:1-11, Ps: 46; Eph 1:17-23; Lk 24:46-53

In our Novena to the Holy Spirit today, we pray for “Peace”. The central message of today’s liturgy, the Seventh Sunday of Easter, is on Prayer and Unity. Unity doesn’t come easy; it requires a lot of effort and sacrifice, but brings a sense of peace. Unity is not uniformity but a sense of love that seeks for the good of the other.

In the first reading (Acts 7: 55-60), we hear of the account of the first Christian martyr- Stephen. As Stephen is being stoned, he prays the first prayer addressed to Jesus in the scriptures, a prayer to be united with Jesus through his death. He prayed for those who were persecuting him just as Jesus did on the cross. Stephen, as the first witness, unites himself with all, even today, who are being persecuted because of their faith.
In the gospel (John 17: 20-26), Jesus prays for His disciples. Jesus speaks of the unity He has with His Father and prays that His disciples be included in that same unity together with all who have come to believe in Him through their witnessing.
Dear friends, there are a lot of divisions in our world today, in our relationships and in our families. As we await the empowerment from on high, the gift of the Holy Spirit, let us open our hearts so as to be filled with refreshing love that unites. Hatred, anger, and unforgiveness give a perpetual wound to the soul unless one is relieved of them.
I pray that as we journey in life today, we will be drawn into union with the blessed Trinity, the model of perfect unity. May we be released from the bondage of hatred, anger, and unforgiveness, for an unforgiving soul will find it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to stay in heaven. Have a Happy and unifying Sunday!

Wishing you a happy new and fruitful month
