HOMILY OF THE 7TH SUNDAY FOR OF THE EASTER: YEAR C

HOMILY THEME: “FATHER, MAY THEY BE COMPLETELY ONE.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Acts 1:1-11, Ps: 46; Eph 1:17-23; Lk 24:46-53

That our destiny is tied to that of the Lord Jesus is demonstrated in today’s first reading which narrates the stoning to death of Stephen because of his faith and Christian witness. United with the Spirit, even in his suffering, he sustained his faith amidst his suffering, and, like Jesus, he willingly yielded his soul to God as he was dying from the stoning: “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”

With those words, he took his destiny from the stony hands of those who thought they had his life in their hands and place it in Jesus’ hands. He even forgave his persecutors as he died. The second reading reminds us that disciples like Stephen are assured their heavenly reward at the celebration of the banquet of eternal life. To them, the prophet proclaims: “Happy are those who will have washed their robes clean, so that they will have the right to feed on the tree of life, and come through the gates into the city.” That should be the goal for us. That is why Jesus prayed for us today in the gospel, asking the Father to sustain us amidst the challenges of this world. He also prayed for the unity of Christians through which he pleaded that God coopts into communion with him, and with the Father. Ascended into heaven, he continues to intercede for us at God’s right hand. When you find yourself knotted in life’s entanglements, remember that you are not alone. You have an advocate in heaven, Christ himself. You also have Our Lady, Undoer of Knots. As we continue our preparation for Pentecost, let us put all our entanglements in prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to pour his seven gifts upon us.

Father, unite us in Christ. Amen.
