HOMILY OF THE ASH WEDNESDAY — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “TEAR YOUR HEART NOT YOUR CLOTHING”

BY: Fr Justus Oruh

Joel 2:12-18, Psalm 51, 2 Corinthians 5:20-6:2, Matthew 6:1-6.16-18

(a) Welcome to the Holy season of Lent. God calls us to repentance. It is a season of 40 days laden with spiritual exercises which bring us closer to God. 40 days journey turning back to God.

(b) Within these 40 days, it is expected that one asks himself/herself; what virtue can I acquire, and what vice or habitual sin should I unlearn which makes me a slave to sin. It is like the 40 days journey of the people Israel leaving the slavery of Egypt moving into the promised Land This is achievable through spiritual exercises, fasting and praying within these 40 days. It is a time of deep reflection about ones life and opening of the heart to God, as it says in Joel, “tear your heart not your clothing” It is not a time to hide our sins but confess it to God, obtain God’s mercy and be freed. The Ash laid upon our foreheads reminds us our frailty, and that we are dusts. It reminds us the shortness of our lives. Lenten season calls us to lead a humble life.

(c) What can I save through sacrifices and abstinence so as used it for the good of others, especially for the poor. What work of mercy can I do in this season? Sharing my time with the lonely, visiting the sick, assisting the aged, praying for those in troubles, giving to the needy. See how great your Easter joy will be after having passed through the Lenten sacrifices.
Wishing you a fruitful Lenten season.
