HOMILY OF THE FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: LIGHT DISPELS DARKNESS

An elderly man had so many challenges, but he remained cheerful. He was asked about the secret of his happiness, and he answered by saying, “You see, the Bible often says, ‘It came to pass’ and not ‘It came to stay.'” If God is for us, no darkness or challenge can stand against our hope and happiness. At that time, when the death of Jesus was getting nearer, the disciples of Jesus were anxious and depressed.

Jesus wanted them to understand that His death would be overshadowed by the glory of the resurrection. Therefore, He took three of His disciples—Peter, James, and John—and they withdrew to the mountain. There He was transfigured before them, and His clothes appeared in dazzling white colour as an expression of the glory which would follow His suffering and death. Moses and Elijah, representing the Law and the Prophets, appeared to confirm that Jesus is the true Messiah. There came a voice from heaven stating, “This is my beloved Son; listen to Him” (Mark 9:7).

The Transfiguration was a special moment for Jesus to reveal His glory to His disciples. The experience of the Transfiguration was like a lightning flash amid the darkness. Can we open our eyes widely to see how transfiguration takes place daily in our lives as God dispels darkness, despondency, doubt, despair, and depression with the glorious light of Jesus’ Transfiguration?
