HOMILY OF THE HOLY FRIDAY — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: THANK GOD IT´S FRIDAY!

Is 52:13-53:12; Heb. 4:14-16,5:7-9; John 18:1-19:42

What’s good about this Friday? Jesus was insulted, spat upon, slapped repeatedly, flogged till he bled from every pore in his body and made to carry a heavy piece of rugged wood. He was abused in the cruelest way imaginable to man. Did you know that Jesus shed all his blood? That’s about five litres of blood. His wrists were nailed to the cross and his feet were joined together and nailed as well. He could not rely on his shattered tendons so he had to alternate between using his back muscles and resting on his nailed feet just so that he could breathe. He did this for about six hours. My God!

Friends, why would the only Son of God endure this untold suffering for mere mortals? Because his love couldn’t, and wouldn’t let us perish. So much good came out of this immense sacrifice. That’s why it’s good Friday. Yes! Today should be the most appropriate day to say “TGIF” (Thank God it’s Friday). This is a gift we can never repay. So when God calls us to love, it’s only because he loved us first. “Let us be confident, then, in approaching the throne of grace, that we shall have mercy from him and find grace when we are in need of help.” Let us change something about our attitude today. We must learn to show this love even to those who hurt us. It’s GOOD Friday after all. As we deny ourselves of food, and abstain from meat, may we offer it up for our sins and those of the whole world.
