HOMILY OF THE MONDAY AFTER PENTECOST — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “MOTHER, BEHOLD THY SON.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Gen 3:9-15, 20 (Acts 1:12-14); Psalm 86(87); John 19:25-34

The outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples at Pentecost sealed the beginning of a new creation; the Church was born with Mary present and collaborating with the Holy Spirit, just as she did with her FIAT when the Savior was to be born. Her presence as mother of the community was an extension of the roles she played in the life of her Son, accompanying him from the womb to the tomb.

When he arose, she was right there to welcome him and was present with the community of disciples as they awaited the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in vigil and prayer. Her YES and her presence reversed the disobedience of our first parents and the consequences of that disobedience, rehearsed in today’s first reading. Unlike, Adam and Eve, who hid when God came calling for them, Mary was alert to the Lord’s visitation and responded promptly when called and given her vocation. Today’s gospel presents Mary’s place as Mother of the Church more adequately. The Cross is where the Hour of Jesus was accomplished. That is the Hour of his exultation as well as the Hour of human salvation. In the Evangelist John’s perspective, Pentecost and the birth of the Church belong with the Hour of Jesus upon the Cross. From that Cross, he gave two gifts as his dying wish: Mary to us as Mother; and us to Mary as her children. As he died, he added the gift of his own Spirit, which was handed down to the Church, represented at the foot of the Cross by the Beloved Disciple and his mother, Mary. Then, of course, followed the gifts of cleansing and life, signaled by the blood and water that issued forth from his side. That is why Pope Francis of blessed memory aptly enjoined us to celebrate the feast of Mary, Mother of the Church, on the day after Pentecost. May she continue to accompany the Church, our families and us.

Risen Jesus, may your Mother intercede for us. Amen.
