Isaiah 42:1-7, Psalm 26:1-3,13-14, John 12:1-11

According to St. Francis de Sales, “We can never love our neigbour too much.” At Bethany, Mary the sister of Martha suspended protocol to reach out to Jesus and knelt at his feet with uncovered hair. She expressed sincere and extravagant love to Jesus without counting the cost. She poured out a costly ointment (perfume) of pure nard on him and wiped his feet with her hair.

Judas Iscariot said, “Why was this oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” John 12:5). He considered pouring expensive perfume on Jesus as a waste because he was counting the cost of the oil and not the value of her action. Judas sounded like many who prefer to celebrate people at death than when they are alive. Jesus, who knew the value of Mary’s action said, “Let her alone, let her keep it for the day of my burial. The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me” (John 12:7). Jesus praised her for demonstrating such great love at the right moment when he was preparing for his passion and death. Jesus spent His entire life pouring out love on the needy and sharing the good news of love.We too should give it all to Jesus. Do we always give him the best or leftovers? How generous are we in giving our time, resources, and energy to him?
