HOMILY OF THE PENTECOST SUNDAY: YEAR A 2026

HOMILY THEME: “RECEIVE THE HOLLY SPIRIT”

BY: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu

Act 2: 1 – 11, 1 Cor 12: 3 – 13, Jn 20: 19 – 23

This is Pentecost Sunday. Today the Lord Jesus has fulfilled the promise he made that he will not leave us orphans. The Holy Spirit has come to infuse into us the breath of life that comes from the Father and the Son. This breath is the fire of God’s love moving accross all nations. It shows that we are all equal before God. No nation or race or ethnicity received more breath than others. It is the breath that has come to renew the face of the earth. It teaches us to understand that God’s love has no limits. Jesus breathed this fire of God’s love into the disciples when he said to them: “Receive the Holy Spirit” (Jn. 20:19-23), He did not give the Spirit to only one of them but to all.

The Spirit from God is not the spirit of fear or timidity. It brings boldness, wisdom, understanding and integrity to all those who worship God in truth and spirit. The disciples were strengthened by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. “They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak foreign languages as the Spirit gave them the gift of speech” (Acts. 2:1-11). All received the Spirit equally.

People from ‘all walks of life’ listened to the disciples and were marveled at their boldness or fearlessness. And they said, “we hear them preaching in our own language about the marvels of God.” This was the day the whole world spoke ONE LANGUAGE! This means that all humanity is one in Christ. There was no racial discrimination, no ethnic difference, no superiority claims and no nationality claims. The different languages spoken on Pentecost Day typified unity in diversity. Paul also used the anology of the humamn body to clarify this wonderful presence of the Holy Spirit. “Just as the human body, though it is made up of many parts, is a single unit because all these parts, though many, make one body, so it is with Christ” (1 Cor. 12: 3-7ff). We are meant to welcome one another as children of one God. Happy Pentecost Sunday.
