HOMILY OF THE SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: YES, I AM A KING!
BY: Fr. Casmir Nkamuke
Daniel 7:13-14; Revelation 1:5-8; John 18:33-37
The Solemnity of Christ the King was instituted in 1925 by Pope Pius XI. At a time when the trends of secularism, enlightenment and scientific revolution were taking the centre stage in the affairs of humanity, this Solemnity was instituted to remind us that the reign of God is eternal and superior to every other world power. The readings of today reminds us that God reigns in all and over all, and that by our virtue of being Christians, we are privileged to partake in the kingship of Christ.

The vision of Daniel in the first reading reminds us that sovereignty, glory and kingship belong to God, and that all authority on earth are subjects to him. This vision, given at a time the Jews were experiencing Syrian persecution, reminds us that only the reign of God is everlasting and invincible.
Saint John reminds us that we all share in the kingship of Christ. Through his passion, death and resurrection, Christ offered us the privilege of sharing in his divinity. As Christians, we believe firmly that no authority, trial, persecution and anxiety can subdue the reign of God we have been privileged to share. Such belief rekindles our steadfastness in faith and helps us to remain focused in our Christian calling amidst distractions and persecutions.
In the gospel reading today, Jesus boldly replies to Pilate, “Yes, I am a king!” Coming at a time when Christ was subject to the judgment of Pilate, this reply reminds us that the reign of Christ cannot be subdued or substituted by any earthly authority. It also encourages us to remain firm under the reign of Christ even amidst trials and tribulations. He came to bear witness to the truth. Listening to him and following his way is the only sign that we are on the side of truth.
Beloved in the Lord, Christ is indeed King. He reigns over the whole world. His kingdom has no end. As children of God and followers of Christ the king, we share in the reign of Christ. This implies that all our actions and thoughts must be subject to the reign of Christ. It also means that there is no situation too challenging that is above the authority of God. As partakers of this eternal kingship, we must live according to the demands of Christ our king and promote the reign of Christ in the world by ensuring that all placed under our charge feel the reign of Christ through our leadership roles.
May God grant us all the grace to submit ourselves under the reign of Christ, and to make his kingship visible on earth through our conducts. May he grant the public office holders the grace to know that they are custodians of those entrusted under their care. May we see the reign in the scientific developments, the trials we face, and in our dreams and desires. May Christ reign in our lives and in our world!
Happy Solemnity of Christ the King!
