HOMILY THEME: HOW TO SEE GOD
BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa
1 John 4:19-5:4, Ps. 72:1-2,14-15,17, Luke 4:14-22
How can we see and love God? We can see and love God through fellow human beings. “For he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen” (1 John 4:19). These are the lyrics of a soul music artiste, India.Arie, titled “I See God in You,” which poses a question: “I wonder, wonder if you really knew that I see God in you?” We can see God in downtrodden people whom Jesus mentions in His mission statement—the poor, captives, the blind, the oppressed (Luke 4:16).

We can see God through people who are in need, in our next-door neighbour, in the person sitting next to us in the bus or the class, the market, the church, or at the workplace. More still, we can see God through the works of His hands (creation). The Psalmist tells us how created things help us see God. He says, “The heavens are telling the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims His handiwork. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard, yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world” (Psalm 19:1-4). The clearest way we can see God is in Jesus. He says, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). He is the image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15). Do we see the image of God in the people around us?
