HOMILY OF THE TUESDAY AFTER PENTECOST — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: SALT OF THE EARTH

BY: Fr. Ernest Cross

2 Cor 1:18-22; Psalm 119:119-135; Matt 5:13-16

Currently, salt is facing some negative publicity, with many people expressing concerns about excessive salt in their diets. However, during Jesus’ time, salt held a highly esteemed reputation. It was valued for enhancing the flavor of food and for its preservative qualities. When Jesus declared, “You are the salt of the earth,” He was reminding His disciples of their identity and mission.

By using the image of salt to describe His followers, Jesus leaves the meaning open to interpretation. He may be suggesting that, just as salt enhances the flavor of food, His disciples are called to enrich the lives of others by embodying the ideals they profess. We are invited to engage with the world as disciples, preserving what is good and adding a unique flavor or dimension that would otherwise be absent.

Our mission is to effect positive change. The beatitudes are closely followed by this metaphor about salt, indicating that if we embrace the teachings of the beatitudes and live by their principles, we will uplift those around us and contribute to a better world.

God bless you.
