HOMILY OF THURSDAY AFTER PENTECOST — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
2 Cor 3:15–4:1; Psalm 85:9-14; Matt 5:20-26
What was set up by Jesus’ insistence on the observance of the Law yesterday is put more profoundly today in the demand for the righteousness of excess. Jesus invites us to surpass conventional expectations in the efforts to do God’s will and commit to being under his rule in our relationship with God.

Not what street wisdom expects; not what everyone does; our actions and words must be determined by what Christ commands. That is the key to the formula we shall be encountering until Matt 5:48: “You have heard that it was said…but I say to you…” Today’s injunction invites disciples to love that surpasses the temptation to anger and its different manifestations, talk less homicide or murder. The caution on reconciliation is a needed one in our time, and in a world that now sees so much anger, deadly anger. But such reconciliation must include a relationship with God, that is marked by sincere repentance, conversion and communion. In baptism, God shone his light in our hearts, so that we may truly reflect, in our lives, the person of Christ, in whom we become part of God’s reconciling love in a sinful world. Together with Christ, we become the revelation of God’s image and glory. The way we can do that is to practice virtue in every ordinary (every-day) situation with extra-ordinary love and humility. That is the demand of the Lord. Why don’t we all try this in our families and see what the results would be? Then we can escalate same to the Church and society levels.
Lord, let your glory dwell in us and in our land. Amen.
