HOMILY OF THURSDAY IN EASTER OCTAVE — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “PEACE BE WITH YOU… YOU ARE WITNESSES TO THESE THINGS.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Acts 3:11-26, Ps. 8:2,5-9, Luke 24:35-48
The presence of the risen Jesus amongst his disciples brought calm and quiet to their troubled and terrified lives again. Yet, he reminded them that the true source of that peace must be in perpetual remembrance amongst God’s people; that he suffered, died and rose from the dead on the third day, so that in him sinners may be reconciled to God and live. That became the central point of the Early Church proclamation (kerygma) by the disciples. That also must now be at the heart of their witness as missionary disciples; that and all that they came to encounter in Christ and heard from him since they were called to follow him.

In and through them would Christ’s continued presence be manifested in the world. The peace they have received they must now bear to others; so also are the proclamation, mighty deeds, teachings and the life of Christ in them through the Eucharist. The fulfilment of Christ’s mandate to them is found in today’s first reading, where they responded to the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the healing of the cripple. From them we hear; “The author of life you put to death, but God raised him from the dead; of this we are witnesses.” They are not just witnesses; they are courageous bearers of the good news. Theirs should challenge us to become more courageous and credible witness to Christ, bearing his peace and saving message.
Lord, make us instruments of your peace and saving grace. Amen.
