HOMILY OF TUESDAY 15TH WEEK OF THE ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: “But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the Day of Judgment than for you.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Isa 7:1-9; Psalm 48:2-8; Matt. 11:20-24
We are all aware that Jesus, the Son of Man, when he returns in his glory will judge all creation and everyone, without exception. That moment is in view today in the gospel as Jesus reproached the cities and peoples to whom he proclaimed the gospel, for their refusal to believe and for their obstinacy. He compares them to Sodom. The question I ask myself always is: what is our situation today, compared to Sodom? Is it not the same, if not worse? The things that God abhors, as we read in the Scriptures, are the things that human beings glory in today. So much rubbish has been normalized and there seem to be no right or wrong any longer.

On the personal level, everyone would be responsible for themselves. We must all, therefore, open our hearts up to God. Collectively, we also have responsibility for the salvation of our ailing world. I often think about the episode where Abraham dialogued with God, who pledged not to destroy Sodom and Gomora if Abraham found some just people there. For the sake of the just, God would have spared the evil city. If God came looking for some just and righteous people today, would you be counted in? If yes, then you must know that for your sake, God would have mercy on our world. If no, then you know that you are on a self-destructive path. For such a person, a turn-around is a must: repentance is the path to life, for the individual and for the collective whole. In the midst of our troubled existence and the many evils that besiege the world, Isaiah’s message from God applies to us even now. God says: “Take care you remain tranquil and do not fear; let not your courage fail…” We all need that reassurance. What is happening in your own life? what are you afraid of? The Lord invites us to trust in him to fight for us; to remain faithful in order that we may remain firm, and to be courageous and not fearful. On this feast day of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, we ask for the motherly intercession of our Blessed Mother upon our world, the Church, our families and our communities. May she bring us peace and tranquility.
Lord, open my heart to your word and bend my will to your bidding. Calm my fears and come to my aid, for in you I trust. Amen.
