Africans say blood is thicker than water, but Jesus teaches us that spiritual relationships are thicker than biological ones. Jesus asked, “Who is my mother, and who are my brethren?” He then said, “Here are my mother and my brethren. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother” (Matthew 12:48-50).

Among Christians, there are several opinions on who these brethren were. One school of thought suggests that they were Jesus’ maternal cousins, as the Greek word for “brother” (adelphos) was often used to describe any biological affinity or kinship, including distant relatives. Another view posits that they were the biological children of Mary. A third perspective is that they were children of Joseph from a previous marriage with a woman named Escha. While the names of these brethren are mentioned in the Gospel of Mark (6:3), there is no conclusive evidence to prove they were the biological sons of Mary or Jesus’ literal brothers.
Thus, it can be confidently deduced that Mary had no other children apart from Jesus. If she had, it would have been unusual for Jesus to entrust his mother to John. Jesus expanded the concept of family ties, showing that spiritual bonds are stronger than biological ones. Are we still clinging to traditional ideas of kinship, or have we fully embraced Jesus’ teaching about spiritual kinship?
